About 45km up the coast towards France from Blanes you find Sant Feliu de Guixols - a peaceful port town with lots of good and reasonably priced hotel accommodation available. It is a good base to have a short break - with good nearby snorkeling possibilities, great hiking available along the cami de ronda, and plentiful watering holes in town with good selections of cheap G&Ts :-) The walk between Feliu and S'Agaro is particularly nice - with the plaja Sa Conca a good place for a relaxing breather, and the seafood restaurant la taverna del mar on platja de sant pol (S'Agaro) also highly recommended. |
A further 20km up past Sant Feliu you find the picture-postcard fishing villages of Calella de Palafrugell and Llafranc. The two villages are full of good cuisine (especially seafood), and the architecture and atmosphere are quintessentially Mediterranean in style - with all the relaxing vibes that this entails. Best of all, the views from the cami de ronda are particularly spectacular in this area. Direction Barcelona the path goes into the wilderness (as a referendum banned development on this patch in the 1990s) - meaning that truly deserted beaches with full privacy and peace are within reach. Make sure to bring enough water / food though - as there is literally nothing available along the way. Direction France takes one high up on the cliffs past the Sant Sebastia lighthouse, then down through beautiful coves and beaches before ending up in Tamariu - which is good for a refreshing post-hike cerveza (with phones for the taxi or bus back if needed!). Hotel Sant Roc (***) in Calella de Palafrugell is recommended if available - with stunning views, and great food.

A further 10km past Calella de Palafrugell one finds Begur, a historical town with a host of nearby beaches and smaller villages. We stayed in Fornells - where there are three good hotel options, and where one can hire a motor boat or kayak from Aiguablava beach for an amazing way to tour the area (rent boat). For foodies the restaurant Hostal Sa Tuna is maybe worth a visit - though a bit expensive, the tuna tartare with wasabi ice cream is amazing. YUM! :-) Hotel Eetu (***), Hotel Aigua Blava (****) and the Hotel Parador de Aiguablava (****), which located best of the three. We stayed at Eetu and had a great time :-) |
Further up the coast near the French border is Cadaqués - which has been a favorite hang out of various famous European artists throughout recent history, and continues to be a source of inspiration today. One can easily chill out here and happily take in the views, atmosphere, and good food for many a contented day. As with the other destinations - good hiking and snorkeling is nearby. For a bit of added culture - check out the nearby Dali museum in Figueres, or explore some of the views that Picasso painted whilst pottering around this enchanting place.
We stayed in Cadaqués on the camping ground, but there is also a very nice Hotel Playa del Sol (****) that we can recommend. |
